Dissipation rate estimates depend on the viscosity of the sea water, which in turn depends on the water temperature. Hence, there is a need to determine the ambient water temperature for the actual sampling environment. If no temperature data is available, a representative water temperature can be taken from a climatology as a fall-back option, but real temperature measurements are preferable.

There are some caveats involved in the temperature estimate, e.g. sensor drift and precision.
