Spectra in the frequency domain are converted into the spatial domain via Taylor's Frozen Turbulence hypothesis. Convert time derivatives to spatial gradients along the direction of profiling using

x=1UPt .

Convert frequency spectra into wavenumber spectra using

k=f/UP and Ψ(k)=UPΨ(f) .

If a sampled quantity, say ζ, has a spectrum, Ψ(k), then this spectrum provides the wavenumber distribution of the variance of ζ. For example,

ζ2=0kNΨ(k)dk

provides the total variance of ζ, where kN=12fs/UP is the Nyquist wavenumber and fs is the sampling rate ζ. The variance located in the wavenumber band of k1 to k2 is

k1k2Ψ(k)dk  .

Thus, a spectrum has units of variance per wavenumber.
